Coaching Thoughts:… Of the ascension of Bassirou Diomaye Faye and leadership in Afrika

I have been unable to articulate the sense of dissonance I have been feeling at the appointment of this gentleman as the new President of Senegal.

So for the first time today I’m able to use the words of my grandmother “O ntlhomola pelo” because while it is something to celebrate, it is also something to remain sober about because it is hard to be a President leading any of the nations on the African continent.

It almost always feels like the birth of a child : Vulnerable and Hopeful requiring a mix of anxiety and optimism.

While the whole world is volatile and complex, there are core challenges of leading in Africa that require a certain sense of being, to be able to lead in the context of unique regional and continental challenges.

I find myself wondering: with the vision he has expressed, is he ready, not just mentally but emotionally and spiritually.

Who is on his side, really? What is he willing to die for? In the face of temptation, does he have the inner strength of the No without guilt.

In essence, Accountability and Consciousness are the core foundations for leaders everywhere. For leaders on the African continent, it is critical to be tuned in to the nuances of these challenges, some of which do not emanate from within the continent.

Not because I am a coach, but having a trusted confidant is possibly one of the most important things he can allow for himself because yoh… Leading in Afrika is not just for anybody, let alone idealists who depend on leadership formulas or rhetoric.

It hurts… But oh the rewards when it works!

Ke a mo rapedisa ka nnete!
